The Mitsubishi Easyphoto ID70

Posted on: 2024-05-02

So, I recently bought a Mitsubishi ID-70 Photokiosk togehter with a CPD70DW-U printer. Why? I'm going to reveal that in the next post.

In the meantime, I have to say, I like it. The printouts are nice, even though the colors are a bit dull. But it prints very fast - a 15x10cm (6x4in) photo takes only a few seconds. Due to the dye-sublimation process there is no ink which can be smudged. The photos can't be too large, however. To print photos from my phone, which can take 108 Megapixel photos, I had to downscale them on my PC first or the result is just a black piece of photopaper.

The Easyphoto ID-70 itself is actually just a PC with a 4GB flash disk and 2GB of RAM, running Debian squeeze. It boots straight into a Java Application for printing photos and burning them to CDs/DVDs. A 800x600 resistive touchscreen is attached to it internally. A root shell without password can easily be accessed by attaching a keyboard through one of the USB Ports and pressing Ctrl+Alt+F3. The shortcut Ctrl+Alt+F4 gets one back into the application.

The CPD70DW-U printer is very similar to the CPD70DW (without "-U" suffix) except that it uses different media and the CPD70DW-U only works with the Easyphoto Kiosk as there are no printer drivers for it.

Imaging the disk

I used the root shell to image the disk. The flash is over 10 years old by now so I don't know in what state it is. As mentioned, mine is configured to work with the CPD70DW-U. The language is set to German.

If you have an ID-70 and experience issues with the internal flash, I'm making my disk image available for download. Don't know how useful it is but Mitsubishi does not provide support to either the printer or the kiosk anymore. I didn't want to just place a 4GB file on my server so you have to take a few extra steps to retrieve it. Make sure you have the required packages, this is for Debian/Ubuntu/Mint. Adapt for your Distro if needed:

sudo apt-get install php-cli unzip make git

Install mycdntool:

git clone https://git.dkia.at/dkia-oss/mycdntool.git
cd mycdntool
sudo make install

Fetch the disk image: (Please note that this content is copyrighted by Mitsubishi and you are only allowed to download this if you own an actual ID-70!)

mycdntool catlf GsAnc2pX.IFOcO-cOaCvxyQ3t74YDX3Jg7NiPcLTEqk > id-70.img

and then dd it over to the new flash disk.
